GOVERNMENT PROCLAMATIONS:

 

SAN JOSE

WHEREAS: The American Society of Hand Therapists (ASHT) is committed to education and injury prevention.

WHEREAS:  Millions of children and adults have hand and upper extremity disorders as a result of school, home, work and leisure activities.

WHEREAS: According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), emergency rooms treat more than 400,000 outdoor garden-tool-related accidents each year.

WHEREAS: More than 74,000 small children, adolescents and adults are injured by rotary, hand and riding power mowers each year due to the improper handling of lawnmowers and 38%  are injured from improper fireworks use as reported by U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. In addition there is a growing trend of repetitive stress injuries in the computer and gaming industry.

WHEREAS: Recent research has shed new light on the contributions of Certified Hand Therapists (C.H.T.) and has increased all of our understanding of the Hand Therapy profession

WHEREAS: Successful healthcare providers must be able to link their clinical expertise to the needs of the patients in order to remain successful. Hand therapists not only link their expertise to the needs of the consumer, but provide quality healthcare and quality patient care in an environment that utilizes the intricacy of rehabilitation procedures and state-of-the-art treatment.

WHEREAS: Hand therapists’ specialized training and clinical expertise provides a quick identification of pathology and complex problems to the upper extremity. The end result of accurate assessments and treatment made by specialized hand therapists equals a shorter treatment time. This translates into medical cost containment and also results in faster recovery – which returns patients to a productive lifestyle.

WHEREAS: Hand Therapists have made many important contributions to society;

 

THEREFORE: June 9-13 was declared as the Hand Therapy Awareness & Injury Prevention Week to encourage all citizens to learn about ways to prevent injuries  and seek the assistance of specialized Hand and Upper Extremity Therapists in the country.

THEREFORE:  I _________________________, _____________________ of the city of San Jose hereby proclaim June 9-13 to be the Hand Therapy Awareness and Injury Prevention Week in _________________ and encourage all our citizens to join in this observation.
